NESTER 2d Workshop in Milan “Networked embedded and control system technologies : European and Russian R&D cooperation

E-mail Print PDF

In conjunction with the 6th International Conference on Informatics in Control, Automation and Robotics - ICINCO 2009, NESTER project organized second project workshop that took place on the 4 July in Milan: http:/www.icinco.org/ws_NESTER.htm

Venue in Milan

The workshop was aimed at strengthening R&D collaboration between   the European Union and Russia in the field of Networked Embedded and Control System Technologies (NECS). To this effect, representatives from both research and industrial communities were brought together to share experiences, present and discuss recent scientific and technological achievements, and identify areas of common interest and potential R&D collaboration in the field of NECS, namely within the scope of upcoming calls of the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme.

Workshop participants had an opportunity to:

  • Meet with European and Russian leading players within the NECS field
  • Get insight into the latest technical developments presented by researchers with first-hand experience
  • Take advantage of networking opportunities to establish new research-research and research-business contacts

The Workshop was aimed at striking an adequate balance between research and industry-related issues, focusing specifically on greater involvement of industrial stakeholders in the project.

Second version of the NECS technologies classification for EU-RU collaboration

E-mail Print PDF
Within any technical project it is very important to organize knowledge in the way understandable in each cultural context. Therefore the elaboration of the NECS technologies classification  - a kind of technology taxonomy what is clear both for the European and for the Russian NECS specialist - is far to be an obvious task.  Just an example to explain why it is so difficult to do. European NECS specialists speak a lot about new middleware products and initiatives. Just what is middleware? EU and RU experts find a lot of descriptions on transaction servers and database connection pool sharing but are they able to define what middleware is in real world terms, and why it’s a big deal in the way clearly comprehensive for both sides?

NESTER partners tried to address this huge terminological challenge. After first investigations and interaction with NECS EU and RU specialists they propose a second version issued from the cross-analysis of existing ICT classifications. This is  two-dimensional classification based on research and technology development vis-à-vis of applications defining four domains within an application context (“NECS users”), and three transversal areas within research and technology development (“NECS R&D offer”).
The elaboration of the NECS technology classification is an open process and EU and RU NECS specialists are invited to share their opinion on the proposed document, to comment, to critic it in order to reach a satisfying consensus on this issue.
